LG Nexus 5
The LG Nexus 5 has arrived in store countrywide and it looks to be one of the better implementations of Google’s KitKat 4.4 around.
Screen
There is a 5-inch glass screen on the front, which is 1080p HD and has 445 pixels per inch, which is very good indeed. The screen is slightly recessed for those drop tests that occur, and the back is a slightly curved polycarbonate blend of plastic that feels nice and “grippy”, so those who do suffer from drop test syndrome should be happy about that. The screen also has Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 so it’s one tough phone for the average fall. The buttons are ceramic, which is a nice touch, and they are firm and easy to control when they are needed.
Camera
It also has a micro-usb port, but unfortunately, no-micro-sim, which means you cannot add more memory. It sports a 13 MP camera with image stabilisation, HDR (one picture correctly exposed, one under and one over, all combined into one picture). The camera works well, but suffers in low-light conditions, where it picks up a lot of noise.
Goodies
It has wireless charging, 803.11ac Wi-Fi, DLNA, Slimport, NFC, USB On The Go and Bluetooth, so lots of goodies to choose from. It comes with Google’s 4.4 KitKat operating system, which is a nice step up, and has facelifts all round for the on-board apps. It also has Google Now, which means you can say “Ok Google” followed by a search pattern, and Google will go and find the subject for you. A very nice touch indeed. Think Apple’s Siri application.
The phone initially comes with one home panel, but you can create as many as you want to your heart’s desire. By the way, Google Hangouts is now the home of your SMS’.
The phone has a Snapdragon 2.3 GHz quadcore 800 processor with 2GB of RAM.
The not-so-good
Now for some not-so-good parts. Besides the camera’s low light level struggles, the phone has no micro-sim port, which means you cannot upgrade your RAM at all. The battery life is also very average.
The good
However, on the bright side, the phone offers really great value given its competition, its fast and the screen does the job.
All in all a great buy.
